Jacked Up!! Top 13 biggest football hits ever

With NCAA Football underway and the start of the NFL season approaching, I figured we should take a look at the best football hits on the web. I fished out the plays with obvious helmet-to-helmet contact because that is not a legal hit. Here are your unlucky 13:

13. Daniel Sepulveda- We've seen this guy before. This punter is all about hard knocks.

12. Lawrence Wright- Watch as the receiver flys 5 feet after being hit.

11. Darrell Reid- Chris, you might want to look out. Is he blind?

10. Rey Maualuga- Kids, this is why a QB should slide when he sees the hit coming.

9. Maurice Jones-Drew- delivers a punishing block.

8. Stanford Samuels- Roscoe Parrish believes he can fly.

7. Jack Tatum- Receiver gets annihilated and his chinstrap popped clean off.

6. Sheldon Brown- Reggie Bush gets decleated and he didn't even see it coming.

5. Quentin Coryatt- Gotta love how nonchalant he is after delivering that big blow.

4. Sean Taylor- You have to feel sorry for this punter.

3. Unknown- This receiver almost loses the top half of his body.

2. Unknown- I can almost feel the ground shaking on this hit.

1. Dennison Robinson- The announcer is not exaggerating when he said he almost got decapitated.

Tell me what you think. Do any hits need to switch places? As always, if you think that I missed something tell me in the comments.

Where should these go?

It may not have the pure power of any of these hits, but my personal favorite is the block Pitt WR Derek Kinder laid on 2 West Virginia players during the equally impressive punt return by Darrelle Revis two years ago.

Number 1 is a great hit, but a far better catch. Dude got blown up and hung on for the completion.

I was at this game, and I thought a guy's head fell off

#1 does not count. Arena should never be confused for real football.

#3 was the hardest hit. That kid looked like he might've been dead.

that is not some kid from ucla in #9 -- that is maurice jones-drew as a freshman.

Nice collection. I think Greg Jones' hit on Dexter Reid a few years back belongs in this list as well.

One of the best hits I ever saw was Keith Byars vs. Pepper Johnson. Pep was chasing Randall Cunningham and didn't see his old Ohio State teammate. Byars knocked him completely horizontal. I was at a football camp with Johnson the next summer and they showed that hit. His face was a mask of stone.

Wright and Brown should be higher. Hitting a man so hard he writhes in pain on the turf or tries to crawl to the sideline deserves more respect.

Yeah Tommy that block isn't as bone crushing as some of these hits but it was nice that he took out two guys at once.

Thanks Quick Draw. Like I said I was bound to miss some things and that was one of those things.

Nazarene, is there another video of this because I can't seem to find one with like a replay or another angle? It looks like one of the two defenders may have gotten his head too close. No doubt though it created a boom.

Anon, why not? It is called Arena FOOTBALL. You have to admit that he got demolished. The receiver does deserve his props on the catch.

I am sorry Anon I shall change that. (MJD)

I initially had the Wesley Mallard play on the list but there was some helmet to helmet there.

Blake, the story sounds good but it is hard to tell from that clip. I will try to find a better one to put up. Curtis Enis wasn't involved in the hit but he didn't play much later either.

Wilbur Marshall doesn't seem to deliver that big of a crunch but it is decent because he knocked him out. It's nice but I don't think it is one of the greatest ever.

Greg Blue is one that I missed. That is a great hit.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

this one and the greg jones one are two of my favorite hits ever, mostly because of the conscious decisions to seek out contact.

also, I heard the Minnesota safety suffered a career-ending injury on this play. anyone know if that's true?

LATE 80'S EARLY 90'S MIAMI-FSU. ROHAN MARLEY(SON OF BOB) KNOCKED A SEMINOLE RECEIVER OUT COLD, OPENED A GASH ON THE GUY'S CHIN DOING SO.

"I fished out the plays with obvious helmet-to-helmet contact because that is not a legal hit."

Please watch the final replay on #10 and explain to me how that's not an obvious helmet-to-helmet hit?

Two others that could be on here.

1. Maurice Sikes for Miami (fla) put a hit on a Pitt receiver after he was waiting for a long pass.

2. The wisconsin-Michigan State game from last 2007 (or 2006, I can't remember) where the receiver almost got beheaded.

Other than those two, the list is great

2 hits spring to mind.

1) Earl Campbell vs. LA Rams.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cWKtv4gxuvQ&feature=related 1:13 in.

Quote from EC: "I came round the end, and I knew he wasn't gonna try tackling me standin up like that"

2) MJD owning Shawne Merriman last year. That was deep.

This is a nice post for recent history but you're missing too many classic hits for this to be considered all time. Many are already listed. And how is the Greg Jones hit not in your list?

Anonymous said...

Where is the hit Penn State's Michael Robinson laid on the Minnesota safety in 05'?

Anonymous said...

so what happened to 2 of the hardest hitters ever in the NFL....ronnie lott and rodney harrison? 2 of the most feared safties did not make the top list, or even the "left overs" at the end.......sad

Anonymous said...

That OSU-Auburn hit has to be on the list. If you remember, that delayed the game for 20 minutes because Auburn's coach came out and told the back he had to walk off the field.

Anonymous said...

Greg Jones should be #1...anyone can lay someone out when they arent looking...don't get me wrong they are all unbelievably impressive hits....but Greg Jones stood toe to toe with that kid and jacked him up....thats impressive...even if it was most likely artifically enhanced

If anyone has a clip, John Lynch knocks Jerome Bettis' helmet clean off during a Stanford-Notre Dame game @ Notre Dame one year - biggest hit I've ever seen the Bus take.

I know it is not football, but was in the stands for this rugby tackle at 2003 world cup. Could hear it from the back of the stand at the other end. Took 5 mins for the guy to get back up.

Remember no padding in rugby.

There are two from Ray Lewis:

The first on a denver bronco on Chris McCalisters 106 yard return.

The second in a Ravens/Cheifs game awhile back. Bam Morris (not a small guy) goes to jump over a defender and is STOPPED by Lewis. That is a big man to be stopping in the air like he did.

Also Bart Scotts hit on Rothesburger. Rothesburger said afterward it was the hardest he had ever gotten hit.

Anonymous said...

What??? No mention of Christian Okoye vs Steve Atwater?

Come on.

Anonymous said...

Many of the hits are terrible technique. The tackler hitting with the top of his helmet...a good way to end up paralyzed.

I like the list, but I would've put Sheldon Brown-Reggie Bush higher on the list - top 5 at least.
Anytime you can make a guy drop to his hands and knees AFTER he's gotten up, you put some serious hurt on him.

Anonymous said...

how is there not any brian dawkins hits!? how about the hit dawkins made on algae crumpler, crumpled him right to the turf

Anonymous said...

I agree... you really gotta put up the Michael Robinson PSU hit. I've never seen a qb destroy a guy like that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZhLLbKCxlg

the michael robinson - dawkins hit was also sick

I wish I could find it on YouTube, but how about Ray Lewis' hit when Chris McAlister returned a punt a few years back on MNF?

This is quite the collection.

Best hit by an offensive player on a defensive one...Steve Largent rules all, and his hit was PAYBACK for a pretty good smack that he'd taken 14 weeks earlier. BONUS...he causes the guy to fumble and Seahawks get the ball back....

Anonymous said...

Check out the hit put on colt brennen by marcus riley, thats worth watching

Anonymous said...

Good stuff, but most of these hits are big guys on little guys with the little guy losing.

I much prefer the smaller Steve Atwater hit on the larger Christian Okoye.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS VID You may want to revise the NUMBER ONE HIT

Wyoming QB literally folded in half BACKWARDS by THREE Nebraska defenders. It is THE SICKEST hit I have EVER SEEN. NUMBER ONE BY FAR

The best hit I have ever witnessed was Quincy Wilson vs. Miami on ESPN in 2003. He killed a DB from Miami and then jumped over him for a touchdown. Simply sick.
